This essay explores obstetric violence as the outcome of the historical medicalization and pathologization of childbirth, alongside institutional control over the female body. Through a genealogical analysis of motherhood in Western tradition, it reveals how women’s bodies have been shaped by medico-scientific and patriarchal frameworks. Obstetric violence thus emerges as a subtle form of symbolic and structural violence, increasingly recognized at the European level, though still within a fragmented context.

Abstract
This essay explores obstetric violence as the outcome of the historical medicalization and pathologization of childbirth, alongside institutional control over the female body. Through a genealogical analysis of motherhood in Western tradition, it reveals how women’s bodies have been shaped by medico-scientific and patriarchal frameworks.
