This contribution investigates the relationship between urban open space, architectural form, and vegetation in the contemporary city. Traditionally, the square and other urban voids have constituted emblematic places in which collective memory, symbolic representation, and the formal identity of the city converge. At the same time, the historical archetype of the city has been founded on a clear separation between built space and nature, admitting vegetation only as a controlled fragment within the urban structure. In response to the growing urgency of redefining modes of inhabitation in relation to natural systems, the text proposes urban open space as a privileged field for examining the evolving relationship between city and vegetation. The urban void is therefore understood as a layered and dynamic ground, where design approaches, cultural values, and contemporary transformations become visible.
