The extent and prevalence of the use of metal elements – from the insertion of pins and brackets to tie-rods – in early modern architecture still need to be assessed, especially in the centuries that preceded pivotal events for the anti-seismic debate, such as the 1693 earthquakes in Val di Noto and the 1726 earthquake in Palermo. An attempt will be made here to make a contribution in this direction by focusing on hidden metal reinforcement.
