The temporal structure of behavior cannot be considered a mere background condition; rather, it is a fundamental component in the organization, expression, and interpretation of the actions of all living beings. Time flow does shape how behaviors unfold, how they are perceived, and how meaning is structured from them. This paper explores the temporal dynamics of behavior by initially examining the aspects from which they originate, namely discrete events, their sequences, and patterns. Methods, instruments and approaches, ranging from software coders, to transition matrices, to T-pattern analysis, used to study these different but intrinsically related behavioral products, will be discussed. Particular emphasis will be placed on the crucial role of the temporal organization, in order to highlight how temporal relationships among events and the complex structural regularities underlying the detection of their patterning do define the intrinsic architecture of action and, most importantly, its meanings. The paper ranges from the use of software coders to the application of more complex frameworks. It compares approaches such as simple quantitative evaluations to more advanced methods such as transition matrices, which focus on the probabilities, and T-pattern analysis, capable of identifying hidden non-linear structural regularities. This comparison highlights how different approaches can either limit or enhance the researcher’s ability to detect the sophisticated dynamics in behavior. The study emphasizes that understanding the temporal dimension and its underlying regularities is essential for decoding not only the form of actions but, most importantly, their possible meanings.
