After eight weeks of either a high-fiber or high-starch diet, 36 moderately trained Dutch warmblood horses were assessed for plasma serotonin (5-HT) and tryptophan (TRP) concentrations. Blood samples taken three hours after feeding showed that those on the high-fiber diet had higher pH and serotonin levels. Furthermore, TRP levels were higher in mares than in geldings. The results indicate that plasma 5-HT could be a useful marker for monitoring serotonergic activity in this context

Abstract

After eight weeks of either a high-fiber or high-starch diet, 36 moderately trained Dutch warmblood horses were assessed for plasma serotonin (5-HT) and tryptophan (TRP) concentrations. Blood samples taken three hours after feeding showed that those on the high-fiber diet had higher pH and serotonin levels. Furthermore, TRP levels were higher in mares than in geldings. The results indicate that plasma 5-HT could be a useful marker for monitoring serotonergic activity in this context
