This essay compares the relationship between the Italian and French communist parties and their respective societies from the mid-1950s to 1968. It links the French May to the Algerian War, Gaullism and the crisis of the PCF’s authority, while reading the Italian 1968 through the PCI’s internal debates after 1956, the transformation of capitalism and Luigi Longo’s strategy. The comparison shows how the PCF reacted defensively to student and worker mobilization, whereas the PCI developed a more flexible, though contested, critical autonomy toward the movement.
