Sabine Wieber’s volume rewrites the history of modern design, identifying Munich-based women as the backbone of Jugendstil. Through the analysis of five fundamental nodes – industrial production, urban activism, technical training, market strategies, and the ergonomic reform of the body – the author demonstrates the existence of a distinct female hegemony within the field. These figures operated with entrepreneurial acumen, anticipating the functionalist tenets of European Modernism. Far from constituting “marginal stories”, the book’s protagonists thus emerge as the true “operating system” of the movement.
