Abstract Op art and virtual novels: analogies between Escher and Perec. The mathematical structure, the notion of reality meant as “human illusion”, the challenge to infinity and the enigmatic structure which give Escher’s works the same structure as a detective story allow us to establish some revealing analogies with Perec’s works. We can find some explicit references to the graphic artist, although such allusions constitute the visual translation of the distress for the return of the same thing, the involuntary return to the same point. Perec, however, does not limit himself to quote Escher, for some of his works can be considered real literary translations of the graphic artist’s works: so, Perec’s Species of Spaces and Other Pieces corresponds to Escher’s Path of Life, while Perec’s A Gallery Portrait offers the same construction as Escher’s Print Gallery.
