The chapter reconstructs Alessandro Natta’s role as Director of the Gramsci Institute around 1956, using new archival sources to examine the elements of innovation and continuity in the cultural policy of the Italian Communist Party. In particular, the chapter explores the emergence of new themes which, under Natta’s direction, were marked by an openness to debate on the forms of capitalist development—a topic that would shape and divide communist culture in the years that followed.
