This essay reconstructs how the Italian Communist Party interpreted the Ustica disaster from 1980 to 1990. Drawing on party press and parliamentary sources, it argues that the PCI lacked a clear political line until the late 1980s. Initially treated as an air accident, Ustica was later framed as part of the unresolved “state massacres” of Republican Italy, especially under Occhetto’s leadership, through themes of secrecy, cover-ups and the crisis of democratic institutions.
