The essay examines Calabria’s forestry policies from the nineteenth century to the Republican period, focusing on reforestation, hydrogeological protection and the shift toward “productive forestry.” It argues that the Calabrian case reveals both the persistence and transformation of the Southern question: environmental degradation, emergency-based state intervention, clientelism, failed regional governance and the marginalization of mountain areas expose deep territorial inequalities within and beyond the nation-state framework.
