This paper presents the making and results of the Manifesto for New Design Craft, a framework developed through a three-year study of over 200 European, Turkish, and Ukrainian practitioners at the intersection of craft, design, and technology. Using a qualitative research strategy combining survey and action research, the study identifies shared values, principles, and processes for hybrid practices, while capturing plurality through four archetypal “souls” of practice. The Manifesto thus positions hybrid practitioners as diverse agents of sustainability and socio-environmental justice.

Abstract

This paper presents the making and results of the Manifesto for New Design Craft, a framework developed through a three-year study of over 200 European, Turkish, and Ukrainian practitioners at the intersection of craft, design, and technology. Using a qualitative research strategy combining survey and action research, the study identifies shared values, principles, and processes for hybrid practices, while capturing plurality through four archetypal “souls” of practice. The Manifesto thus positions hybrid practitioners as diverse agents of sustainability and socio-environmental justice.
