Esperienze enologiche brings together a series of international contributions devoted to wine as a cultural object, an aesthetic experience, and a relational device. Drawing on semiotics, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, and science and technology studies, the volume challenges the dominant paradigm that reduces wine to a product to be evaluated according to expertise, authenticity, and intrinsic quality. Through essays by prominent authors such as Nicola Perullo, Antoine Hennion, Steven Shapin, Gloria Origgi, Ophelia Deroy, Geneviève Teil, Marion Demossier, and Jacky Rigaux, the book explores themes such as the social construction of taste, wine description regimes, forms of expert authority, the role of reputation, the performativity of tasting practices, and the cultural nature of terroir. The introduction develops a critical reflection on the contemporary sclerosis of wine discourse, showing how many rhetorics of excellence and authenticity have progressively rigidified wine experience within standardized descriptive codes. Against this perspective, the volume restores centrality to practices, relations, contexts, and mediating processes that make wine an open, situated, and continuously negotiated experience. Esperienze enologiche ultimately aims to provide a theoretical and interdisciplinary framework for rethinking wine beyond a purely evaluative paradigm, highlighting its aesthetic, social, and symbolic complexity.
