This contribution reconstructs the way in which the lever of public order was used in the Republic of San Marino between 1919 and 1921 to impose a socio-economic bloc at the helm of the country, one that would determine its fate in the years that followed. The episode also makes it possible to define the model of diplomatic relations between the Republic and the Kingdom of Italy and may offer a useful perspective for analyzing the conflictual relationship that emerged among different components of the Italian state in the period from the crisis of the liberal regime to the rise of Fascism.
