This article reconstructs how, from the 1960s to the 1980s, a new paradigm for interpreting Gramsci emerged within Italian and international historiography. The essay follows debates on the Southern question, passive revolution, Americanism/Fordism, fascism, hegemony and the relation between state, civil society and economy. Through the work of scholars such as Franco De Felice, Leonardo Paggi and Giuseppe Vacca, the article shows how Gramscian categories helped rethink twentieth-century political transformations beyond economic determinism, offering a durable framework for historical research.
