This paper presents a service-learning experience with university students from the Master Degree in Pedagogical Sciences, focusing on the reading of picture books and silent books in two pediatric wards of two public hospitals in Palermo. The students were engaged in reading with hospidalized children and, subsequently, in individual and group reflection sessions. Throughout the classroom lessons, the critical selection of texts was intertwined with theoretical and methodological insights and with workshop practices of shared reading and group reflection, starting from the aesthetic dimension and emotional resonances. Through a detailed narrative of the different phases of the process, the article aims to investigate the transformative potential of service-learning in university teaching practices and, concurrently, the healing efficacy of reading in vulnerable contexts. The data, collected through a mixed-methods approach, demonstrate the significance of the experience in activating transversal pedagogical skills and increasing awareness of the value of reading. At the same time, they highlight the effectiveness of service learning in promoting dialogue between universities, local services, and communities from an ecological and systemic perspective.
