The essay reconstructs the family and cultural context in which Gabriele Dara Jr. received his early education and developed the idea of writing the opera Il Canto Ultimo di Bala. His father Andrea’s influence was crucial, as he repeatedly urged his son to study the history of Palazzo Adriano and the archaic traditions of the oldest Arbëresh settlement in Sicily. Returning to Agrigento after a long post-risorgimental period spent in various cities in northern Italy, Dara wrote his major work, destined to become a masterpiece of Albanian Romanticism.
