The paper aims to examine, through an exegetical analysis, the seven constitutions from the chancery of Valentinian and Valens, collected in the ninth book of the Consultatio veteris cuiusdam iurisconsulti (Cons. 9.1-9.7). This is a very significant sample of imperial provisions, since they represent one of the rare examples of rescripts directed to private individuals in late antiquity.
