The ‘joint winners’. A curious constant in the competitive examinations for the chair of Criminal law and procedure at the Royal University of Palermo (1865, 1881, 1882). The article reconstructs the three competitions for the chair of Criminal law and procedure held at the Royal University of Palermo in 1865, 1881, and 1882. Three main points are particularly emphasized: the changes that occurred in the competitions between 1865 and 1882; the clash – during one of the three competitions – between Enrico Ferri and Luigi Lucchini, two of the most prominent figures in late 19th century Criminal law doctrine; and finally, attention is drawn to what is certainly the most interesting aspect of the three competitions: the extraordinary coincidence of having, each time, two candidates tied at the top of the final ranking.
