Le scritture della strage

This essay analyzes the forms assumed by literary and para-literary writing in Sicily in response to the Mafia massacres of 1992, identifying that year as a symbolic turning point in the contemporary cultural imagination. Through a survey of heterogeneous texts—ranging from journalistic non-fiction to civic poetry, from narrative fiction to drama—the study reconstructs the evolution of literary responses to the Mafia offensive and to the collective trauma it produced. Particular attention is devoted to the earliest reactions, often expressed through lyrical and allegorical registers, and to the subsequent expansion of narrative production, which was not always accompanied by an adequate level of formal and critical reflection. The essay also highlights the risk of a stereotyped and banalizing anti-Mafia rhetoric, setting against it examples of works capable of elaborating mourning and memory through a conscious stylistic and narrative inquiry, thereby restoring to literature a critical and civic function that cannot be reduced to mere testimony.

Il saggio analizza le forme assunte dalla scrittura letteraria e para-letteraria in Sicilia in relazione alle stragi mafiose del 1992, individuando in quell’anno una cesura simbolica nell’immaginario culturale contemporaneo. Attraverso una ricognizione di testi eterogenei – dalla non fiction giornalistica alla poesia civile, dalla narrativa alla drammaturgia – viene ricostruita l’evoluzione delle risposte letterarie all’offensiva mafiosa e al trauma collettivo che ne è derivato. Una particolare attenzione è riservata alle prime reazioni, spesso affidate a registri lirici e allegorici, e alla successiva crescita di una produzione narrativa sempre più ampia, non sempre accompagnata da un adeguato approfondimento formale e critico. Il contributo evidenzia inoltre il rischio di una retorica antimafiosa stereotipata e banalizzante, contrapponendovi esempi di opere capaci di elaborare il lutto e la memoria attraverso una consapevole ricerca stilistica e narrativa, restituendo alla letteratura una funzione critica e civile non riducibile a semplice testimonianza.
