Sicilian literary culture of the first half of the 19th century appears to have been overlooked in national historiography. From the later works of Giovanni Meli to the literary successes of Giovanni Verga, a fifty-year period seems to have effectively vanished, as if erased. Yet that was a highly vibrant and fruitful time. It was an era in which a number of female poets were active, whose literary legacy must be recovered and celebrated. What we might, albeit somewhat loosely, define as the literature of the Risorgimento era in Sicily must finally be re-read and appreciated: not to indulge in claims of any sort, perhaps paradoxically inspired by some resurgent Sicilian nationalism, obviously; but rather to try to fill in some gaps, and, above all, to redefine a cultural and literary field and, not least, to reflect on the causes of these omissions.

Abstract
Sicilian literary culture of the first half of the 19th century appears to have been overlooked in national historiography. From the later works of Giovanni Meli to the literary successes of Giovanni Verga, a fifty-year period seems to have effectively vanished, as if erased. Yet that was a highly vibrant and fruitful time. It was an era in which a number of female poets were active, whose literary legacy must be recovered and celebrated. What we might, albeit somewhat loosely, define as the literature of the Risorgimento era in Sicily must finally be re-read and appreciated: not to indulge in claims of any sort, perhaps paradoxically inspired by some resurgent Sicilian nationalism, obviously; but rather to try to fill in some gaps, and, above all, to redefine a cultural and literary field and, not least, to reflect on the causes of these omissions.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
