PALERMO 1630: COMMITTENZA ISTITUZIONALE E QUADRI PROFESSIONALI. IL CASO DELLA VIA ALCALÀ

The year 1630 marks the beginning of a very particular decade, in which some important episodes concretely mark a change in the settlement and representative structure of the capital, so much so that the clear fracture between the walled city and the surrounding countryside is replaced by the transfer to some areas outside the walls of the same architectural magniloquence that is obligatory inside the city. In this sense, the layout of Via Alcalà with the definition of the plan of Sant'Antonino constitutes an exemplary case of advancement of the urban plan on the one hand, a harbinger of further possible expansions of the city, and of artistic magnificence, hydraulic technique and landscape culture on the other, achieved thanks to a prestigious team of workers hired by the Palermo Senate.
