The paper analyses, on the one hand, the Italian substantive law that regulates civil unions between same-sex couples as the so-called «cohabitation», recently introduced and regulated by Law 76/2016. On the other hand, it also examines the rules of private international law that have been enacted to determine the applicable law and jurisdiction over these «new» family situations, as well as the effects produced in Italy by family statutes established abroad.
