Architecture, urban planning and environmental design are not viewed as exclusively technical disciplines, but as cultural, social and political practices that play an active role in shaping the conditions of contemporary living. Within this framework, sustainable design takes on an ethical as well as an operational dimension. Spatial choices — from the layout of rooms to the configuration of public space, from the selection of materials to the organisation of pathways — have a direct impact on possibilities for access, movement and interaction. Built space is never neutral: it embodies norms, reflects hierarchies and contributes to making certain subjects visible or invisible. Rethinking living in an inclusive way therefore means critically questioning these assumptions and developing design tools capable of accommodating the complexity of contemporary experiences.
