Universal accessibility is now one of the most significant paradigms in contemporary architectural and urban design, as it profoundly redefines the relationship between space, the body and society. It is no longer merely a question of ensuring physical access to a building or the basic use of a service, but of rethinking the built environment as a system of relationships in which orientation, understanding, autonomy and safety constitute essential conditions of citizenship. From this perspective, space is not neutral: it can facilitate or hinder use, it can make some people visible whilst marginalising others, and it can support autonomy or create dependency. For this reason, universal accessibility is no longer regarded as an isolated technical requirement, but as a structural component of design quality.
