The concept of the architecture of meaning has its roots in twentieth-century semiotic theory, particularly in the structuralist and post-structuralist tradition, which has explored language as a system for organising reality. From this perspective, meaning is not fixed once and for all, but emerges from the interaction between signs, practices and cultural contexts. Foundational works such as Ferdinand de Saussure’s Cours de linguistique générale (1916) and Umberto Eco’s Trattato di semiotica generale (1975) have shown how every symbolic system functions according to differential relations, and how meaning is the product of a structure, not of an essence.
