This afterword explores how museums can redefine their public role in increasingly hybrid physical-digital environments. Building on Paola La Scala’s research, it argues that design should move beyond enabling visitor participation as an end in itself and instead foster meaningful social interaction, collaborative learning, and community building. The afterword highlights the need to create intentional digital gathering spaces, design for diversity and inclusion, and support visitor agency through open and non-linear experiences. It also stresses the ethical responsibilities of hybrid museum design, particularly regarding data privacy, transparency, and equitable participation. Ultimately, it proposes that the future of museums depends not only on technological innovation, but on their capacity to design for genuine connection, critical reflection, and socially engaged cultural experiences.
