In 2022, thirty years after the Capaci and Via d’Amelio massacres of 1992, the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Palermo launched an interdisciplinary research project focusing on the dramatic turning point represented by that year. This essay draws on the Officina ’92/’22 seminar series, which comprised open meetings and debates for students and the wider community. These meetings focused on some of the key turning points that marked 1992: These include the Mafia massacres; the state’s response to Mafia terrorism and the resulting legislation in the fight against the Mafia; the crisis of the Italian political system; and the establishment of the European Union with the signing of the Maastricht Treaty and Italy’s entry into the eurozone. Within this framework, this contribution examines how the memory and history of the 1992 massacres have been constructed in Sicily over the last thirty years. Drawing on oral sources, it reconstructs certain phases of the 'civil' anti-Mafia movement and the role of women in particular.
