«Ad divina officia decantanda». Aspetti musicali e libri liturgici nella documentazione delle Sacre Regie Visite di Sicilia (secc. XVI-XVII)

In Sicily, the presence of music in ordinary and extraordinary liturgy has always been of undoubted importance. However, the dispersion of much of the documentation makes it difficult to reconstruct this aspect, especially in the period between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern age. With regard to the 16th and early 17th century, more detailed information can be found in the Sacre Regie Visite, reports that were drawn up on the occasion of inspection visits by a royal commissioner to the churches and dioceses of the island. The inspections concerned the institutions of royal patronage, i.e. the Benedictine and Basilian cathedrals and monasteries, but the intervention of the visitors could also extend to other institutions on the island, by virtue of the privilege of the apostolica legazia. News of musical interest involved various aspects: from information on organs and organists, to the possible presence of music chapels, to the relationship between chant and liturgy. In particular, two elements deserve specific attention. On the one hand, the lists of liturgico-musical books in the possession of the institutions, a precious testimony of a very rich endowment, today unfortunately largely dispersed. On the other hand, the focus on the faults of divine worship, which, especially from the second half of the 16th century onwards, will bring to light unruliness and infractions relating to singing and musical practice. In the light of these premises, this contribution intends to analyse the documentation of the Regie Visite from a musical perspective, establishing its links with the other information known up to now and highlighting its importance in the context of a more precise knowledge of the liturgico-musical panorama of the period.

In Sicilia, la presenza della musica nella liturgia sia ordinaria che straordinaria è stata da sempre di indubbia importanza. Tuttavia, la dispersione di gran parte della documentazione rende difficile ricostruire questo aspetto, soprattutto nel periodo compreso tra il Medioevo e la prima età moderna. Relativamente al XVI e agli inizi del XVII secolo, informazioni più dettagliate si possono rintracciare nelle Sacre Regie Visite, relazioni redatte in occasione delle ispezioni compiute da un commissario regio presso le chiese e le diocesi dell’isola. Le visite riguardavano le istituzioni di regio patronato, cioè le cattedrali e i monasteri benedettini e basiliani, ma l’intervento dei visitatori poteva estendersi anche ad altre istituzioni dell’isola, in virtù del privilegio della legazia apostolica. Le notizie di interesse musicale coinvolgono diversi aspetti: dalle informazioni su organi e organisti, alla possibile presenza di cappelle musicali, fino al rapporto tra canto e liturgia. In particolare, due elementi meritano attenzione specifica. Da un lato, gli elenchi dei libri liturgico-musicali in possesso delle istituzioni, preziosa testimonianza di una dotazione un tempo ricca, oggi purtroppo in gran parte dispersa. Dall’altro, l’attenzione rivolta alle mancanze del culto divino, che soprattutto a partire dalla seconda metà del XVI secolo mettono in luce disordini e infrazioni relativi al canto e alla pratica musicale. Alla luce di queste premesse, il presente contributo intende analizzare la documentazione delle Regie Visite da una prospettiva musicale, mettendone in relazione i dati con le altre informazioni finora note e sottolineandone l’importanza nel contesto di una più precisa conoscenza del panorama liturgico-musicale del periodo.
