Abstract
At an intermediate distance between Mount Etna and the sea, the Benedictine community established its first settlement in Nicolosi. Shaped by the volcano’s dual nature—both destructive and fertile—the site offered the isolation and abundance required by monastic life. This deliberate marginality, initially sought as a condition of spiritual concentration and productive self-sufficiency, gradually became restrictive. Located at the threshold between mountain and plain, Nicolosi functioned as both a place of passage and of rest. Two centuries later, the growing political and cultural centrality of Catania led the monks to relocate toward the city, transforming their settlement from an agricultural cell into an urban institution. Abandoned thereafter, the monastery entered a state of decay, where ruins and fragments now stand as material traces of memory. Partial restoration works carried out in 2005 recovered selected portions of the complex for administrative use.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
