The introduction of classicism in the Sicilian architecture began around the second half of the 15th century in the main coastal cities, Palermo and Messina, and spread gradually, but at varying speeds, throughout Sicily during the 16th century. A correct understanding of the phenomenon therefore requires broadening the focus to include centers that constitute points of secondary reception, reworking, and sometimes relaunching of innovations coming from the sea, in a context characterized by polycentrism such as that of early modern Sicily. With this perspective, this contribution focuses on the territory of the Nebrodi and eastern Madonie mountains, identifying themes, works, and sequences of design experiences which, between emulation and competition, both short- and long-range, reveal a dynamic context and appear to exemplify the dynamics of the spread of Renaissance models in Sicilian architecture.
