The paper is intended to shed light on a topic that has been little or not at all investigated to date, the presence of doctors and surgeons attached to the armies during the long War of the Vespers (1282- 1372). Beginning with a survey of the medical and surgical professionals working in the Kingdom of Sicily ultra Pharum, and their relations with the Aragonese sovereigns, the view will be widened to the Kingdom of Sicily citra Pharum, the Neapolitan and Angevin kings, verifying the presence of medical practices addressed to the wounded, with particular attention to the connections between the epidemic waves that followed the arrival of the plague in Messina in 1347, which soon spread to the rest of Europe, and the effects on the truces. The aim is not only to ascertain the existence, in the time span and area under investigation, of a Military Medicine, but also to examine the possible impact of War Surgery on medical action, also in the sense of possible repercussions and developments in the context of hospital care and treatment of war wounds: whether and how the plague – which was destined to change not only the urban landscape but also mentalities, charity and sensibilities – could have influenced the course of the war and the initiation of specific truces.

Abstract
The paper is intended to shed light on a topic that has been little or not at all investigated to date, the presence of doctors and surgeons attached to the armies during the long War of the Vespers (1282- 1372).
