This study adopts an archaeomusicological approach to analyze the role of musical and choreographic performances in Greek funerary rituals. By examining iconographic sources and material remains, the author reconstructs the soundscape of ceremonial phases—such as the prothesis, ekphora, and rites at the tomb—highlighting music and dance as structural elements of the ritual action. The paper further explores the significance of depositing musical instruments in graves as an indicator of social status and the symbolic, salvific value attributed to sound in Orphic and Dionysian religious contexts.

Abstract
This study adopts an archaeomusicological approach to analyze the role of musical and choreographic performances in Greek funerary rituals. By examining iconographic sources and material remains, the author reconstructs the soundscape of ceremonial phases—such as the prothesis, ekphora, and rites at the tomb—highlighting music and dance as structural elements of the ritual action. The paper further explores the significance of depositing musical instruments in graves as an indicator of social status and the symbolic, salvific value attributed to sound in Orphic and Dionysian religious contexts.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
