Recent studies have proposed research hypotheses on the role of sound in the ancient world, incorporating insights from archaeological studies. This emerging field encompasses Archaeoacoustics, Archaeomusicology, and Soundscape Archaeology, focusing on the interaction between places, urban spaces, humans, and sonic events. These studies highlight how landscapes were immersed in a world of sound that included anthropophony (human-produced sounds), biophony (sounds produced by living beings), and geophony (sounds produced by natural elements like volcanoes). Moreover, they underscore the importance of the sonic fabric of cities in social and religious activities, where musical performance, dance, and multisensory aspects played pivotal roles. Through selected case studies, it will also explore how digital technologies and virtual acoustics are enhancing our understanding of the architecture-sound nexus in the past and developing new strategies for improving our knowledge of the Sonic Heritage — the sound heritage of historically and archaeologically significant sites and structures.
