Following the fall of the Iron Curtain, the literary work of Martin Camaj, long banned in Albania, attracted the attention of scholars of contemporary Albanian literature. Among the many challenges encountered was Camaj’s particular predilection for the modernist and symbolist literary tradition, which he acquired after moving to Italy in 1960. Significant traces of this shift in Camaj’s poetics can also be found in his early work, which is the subject of this essay.
