In this paper will be re-considered a terracotta representing a wind instrument player. A carefully observation of his posture and of the morphology of his instrument seem reveal that the musician is playing a salpinx, a sort of trumpet which was played not only during athletic competitions and as accompaniment to various contests, but also in various sacred occasions in sanctuaries, creating the sonic atmosphere at ceremonies, and enhancing the sense of numinous in the participants. On these occasions, the salpinx was chosen based on its musical potential and traditions associated with it. Given the relationship of the instrument with the military sphere, the representation of a salpiktes in Akragas could be explained, taking into account the consideration of the musical training in the education of the male polites.
In questo lavoro sarà ri-considerata una terracotta rappresentante un suonatore di strumento a fiato. Un’attenta osservazione della sua postura e della morfologia del suo strumento sembrano rivelare che il musicista stia suonando una salpinx, una sorta di tromba che veniva suonata non solo durante le gare atletiche e come accompagnamento a varie gare, ma anche in varie occasioni sacre nei santuari, contribuendo a creare l’atmosfera sonora durante le cerimonie e ad aumentare il senso di numinoso nei partecipanti. In queste occasioni la salpinx veniva suonata per le sue potenzialità musicali e per le tradizioni ad essa associate. Data la relazione dello strumento con la sfera militare, la rappresentazione di un salpiktes ad Akragas potrebbe essere spiegata, tenendo conto della considerazione che l’educazione musicale aveva nel percorso di formazione dei cittadini maschi.
