La chiesa di San Giovanni Battista della Nazione napoletana a Palermo: architettura, spazi e usi fra Cinque e Seicento

The contribution briefly traces the long construction process of the church of San Giovanni Battista della Nazione Napoletana in Palermo, from 1527 to the early 17th century, also based on unpublished archival sources, and offers a critical analysis of the building's spaces and structures, which oscillate between continuity with established traditions and a response to new demands, also linked to the desire for self-representation of the commissioning confraternity. With the help of up-to-date surveying and digital modeling techniques, the inconsistencies and ambiguities found in the current building have also been observed, attempting to interpret them and formulate reconstructive hypotheses, with particular attention to the transformations resulting from the urban construction site for the extension of Via Toledo, which intersected its structures.

Il contributo traccia brevemente il lungo processo costruttivo della chiesa di San Giovanni Battista della Nazione napoletana a Palermo, dal 1527 ai primi anni del XVII secolo, basandosi anche su fonti archivistiche inedite, e propone un’analisi critica degli spazi e delle strutture dell’edificio, che oscillano tra la continuità con tradizioni consolidate e la risposta a nuove istanze, legate anche alla volontà di autorappresentazione della confraternita committente. Con l’ausilio di aggiornate tecniche di rilievo e modellazione digitale sono state osservate inoltre le incongruenze e le ambiguità riscontrabili nell’edificio attuale, provando a interpretarle e a formulare ipotesi ricostruttive, con particolare attenzione alle trasformazioni conseguenti al cantiere urbano per il prolungamento della via Toledo, che ne intercettò le strutture.
