La rota ventorum di Froumund di Tegernsee tra istruzione, tradizione e dibattito politico-culturale

This article analyses the rota ventorum preserved on f. 2r of the manuscript Krakau, Biblioteka Jagiellonska, Lat. Qu. 939, attributed to Froumund of Tegernsee, and shows how the latter transformed the wind diagram from an eminently scientific-didactic tool into a political-cultural manifesto through an ingenious use of trilingualism and bigraphism featuring in his version of the rota. Building on the authority of the Latin and above all Greek tradition, reinforced by the presence at court of the Empress Theophano and by the renewed interest of the Holy Roman Empire in the Byzantine world, Froumund uses colours, space and scripts not only to highlight the connection between classical tradition and German culture, but also to underline the importance and supremacy of German culture and language in the contemporary world, as well as in the divine order of the cosmos.

Questo articolo analizza la rota ventorum conservata a f. 2r del manoscritto Krakau, Biblioteka Jagiellonska, Lat. Qu. 939, attribuita a Froumund di Tegernsee, e mostra come quest'ultimo abbia trasformato la rosa dei venti da strumento eminentemente scientifico-didattico in un manifesto politico-culturale attraverso un ingegnoso uso del trilinguismo e del bigrafismo presenti nella sua versione della rota. Basandosi sull'autorevolezza della tradizione latina e soprattutto greca, rafforzata dalla presenza a corte dell'imperatrice Teofano e dal rinnovato interesse del Sacro Romano Impero per il mondo bizantino, Froumund utilizza colori, spazio e scrittura non solo per evidenziare il legame tra tradizione classica e cultura tedesca, ma anche per sottolineare l'importanza e la supremazia della cultura e della lingua tedesca nel mondo contemporaneo, nonché nell'ordine divino del cosmo.
