The article traces the troubled genesis of Donizetti’s Deux hommes et une femme and its failed premiere at the Opéra-Comique, while examining the work’s themes, style, and underlying marital cynicism. Drawing on historical sources and the critical edition, it reveals an opera combining comedy, domestic violence, and key features of nineteenth-century opéra-comique.
