This paper examines the contemporary Southern Question, analyzing its historical, social, and moral roots from the Unification of Italy to the present day. The “southerner” has long been perceived as the problem—a symbol of economic and social backwardness and a victim of structural inequality that continues to define the relationship between Northern and Southern Italy. The essay explores the dynamics of marginalization and the systemic crisis affecting southern society, reinterpreting the concepts of economic, political, and identity crises. Special attention is given to the phenomenon of brain drain, as an expression of the failure to value the human and social capital of the territory, as well as to the crisis of trust toward institutions and the loss of a sense of community belonging. Drawing on the theoretical perspectives of Giddens, Boudon, and Abbruzzese, the study analyzes the relationship between identity, work, and social trust, emphasizing how the lack of meritocracy and the poor management of public policies have generated mistrust, resignation, and cultural impoverishment. The paper calls for a rethinking of territorial development strategies, promoting internal resources, human capital, and social cohesion as essential tools for the revival of Southern Italy.
