The Holy Week celebrations in Enna represent a complex ritual device in which faith, memory, and the construction of collective identity intertwine. From a sociological standpoint, these practices go beyond expressing the community’s religious dimension; they function as mechanisms that structure and reproduce social order, defining hierarchies, forms of belonging, and social solidarity. The confraternities, heirs of medieval guilds later shaped by the Spanish confradías model, stand at the core of this dynamic: through ritual performance, the symbolic management of death, and the ritualization of suffering, they strengthen community bonds and foster social cohesion. The hooding, silence, and collective gestures of the confreres convey values of humility, penitence, and belonging, acting as a shared and recognizable symbolic language. Thus, Enna’s Holy Week can be interpreted as a form of popular religiosity that, while rooted in Catholic tradition and Spanish influence, continues to renew the city’s historical and cultural memory, taking shape as a “social dramaturgy” in which the community performs itself. In this perspective, the ritual becomes an act of collective self-representation and identity reproduction, mediating between the sacred and the profane, between the past and the present of local society.
Le celebrazioni della Settimana Santa a Enna costituiscono un dispositivo rituale complesso in cui si intrecciano fede, memoria e costruzione dell’identità collettiva. Dal punto di vista sociologico, tali pratiche non si limitano a esprimere la dimensione religiosa della comunità, ma assumono la funzione di strutturare e riprodurre l’ordine sociale, definendo gerarchie, appartenenze e forme di solidarietà. Le confraternite, eredi delle antiche corporazioni medievali e poi modellate secondo il sistema delle confradias spagnole, rappresentano il fulcro di questa dinamica: attraverso i loro rituali, la gestione simbolica della morte e la ritualizzazione della sofferenza, esse consolidano legami comunitari e generano forme di coesione sociale. L’incappucciamento, il silenzio e la gestualità collettiva dei confrati veicolano valori di umiltà, penitenza e appartenenza, fungendo da linguaggio simbolico condiviso e riconoscibile. La Settimana Santa ennese, quindi, può essere interpretata come un fenomeno di religiosità popolare che, pur affondando le radici nella tradizione cattolica e nella dominazione spagnola, continua a rinnovare la memoria storica e culturale della città, configurandosi come una “drammaturgia sociale” in cui la comunità mette in scena se stessa. In tale prospettiva, il rito diventa un atto di autorappresentazione collettiva e di riproduzione identitaria, capace di mediare tra sacro e profano, tra il passato e il presente della società locale.
