The study aims to analyze the grammatical metalanguage shown by works belonging to the so-called Missionary Linguistics, in order to contribute to the reconstruction of the syntactic thought during the Early Modern Era. In particular, the study takes into account a work titled Grammatica o arte de la lengua general de los indios de los reynos del Perú, that represents the first grammatical description of Quechua, written by a Spanish Dominican missionary, Domingo de Santo Tomás, and printed in Valladolid in 1560. The textual analysis focuses on metaterms conveying the idea of government with reference to the syntactic relation between adpositions and cases. The terminology used by this American missionary grammarian shows both a connection with the Latin grammatical tradition, inherited through the Medieval period, and some peculiarities that will be shared by other missionary grammarians after.
