As part of the WeDarch educational experimentation on the university city of Palermo (scientific coordination by Andrea Sciascia), this essay explores the surroundings of the study area, envisioning principles to transform the current mono-functional enclosure into a campus open to the city. The university city stretches between the historic center, residual countryside, and recent suburban neighborhoods, along the bed of an ancient watercourse. It is surrounded by heterogeneous road arteries: the city ring road to the southwest, Corso Pietro Pisani to the north, Via Re Ruggero to the northeast, and Via Ernesto Basile to the south. The dominance of traffic along the perimeter—at times fast-moving—distances, both perceptually and functionally, several significant historical and environmental features located just beyond these roads, only a few meters from the university pavilions. These include areas in the historic center (to the northeast), beyond Corso Pisani (to the north), among the remaining fields of the Conca d’Oro (to the southeast), and in the Montegrappa-Santa Rosalia-Medaglie d’Oro neighborhood (to the south). Residents of the surrounding areas seldom enter the specialized enclosure, mostly using the park for sports activities and, to a lesser extent, accessing the corporate nursery. Among the university population, out-of-town students live in neighboring districts, particularly along those edges where the popular character typical of the boroughs and some open spaces within public housing is less pronounced. A bird’s-eye exploration of the university city’s surroundings reveals the proximity between the Garofala ditch and the Oreto valley and their continuity with the hinterland. From above, other fragments can be seen which, if reconnected, could provide a pedestrian continuity (from north to south): Danisinni, the former psychiatric hospital on Via La Loggia, Villa Napoli (Cuba Soprana), Lo Porto nurseries, Garofala ditch, Boccadifalco stream, Oreto. These relationships are less evident in direct experience, where people mostly travel by car, without concern for either the shortest or the most pleasant route.
