The Athens Charter of 1931 and the Venice Charter of 1964 prescribed, in the field of consolidation, the use of traditional techniques to be substituted, should these prove inefficient, by more modern and effective means. The two Charters, despite a strong reference to traditional techniques, translated into more innovative interventions in operational practice, with the use of reinforced concrete, but also with the experimentation of new materials, albeit less so than the experiences conducted up to then. The contribution of Pietro Lojacono, Superintendent of the Province of Catania from 1954 to 1963, shows in the consolidations implemented, numerous discrepancies between theory and practice, particularly evident in the case of the Church of S. Giovanni Battista in Vizzini (Catania). However, the engineer’s approach to the Venice Charter is peculiar in its focus on historical research and the dissemination of his restoration work through specialist publications.
