After brief historical references on the use of empirical research methods in teaching, the different methodological rules, the different explanatory models and the different problem‐solving strategies are presented: behaviorist experimentalism, the phenomenological approach, action research. Constructivism is reported as the most widespread epistemology so far and EBE as a promising type of second‐level research. It is hoped that researchers, with awareness, will be able to extract from each paradigm what they need to understand and narrate the different educational realities.
