La nascita del Mito

The article briefly outlines the reasons that led Palermo from the early 19th century onwards to the reappraisal of Norman architecture with the consequent spread of special studies and the realisation of restorations and new buildings in the neo-medieval style. During this period, the term “Arab-Norman” was coined, relating to the style of monuments from the medieval period regardless of the era of their foundation. In the second half of the century, the process of association between the now mythological Norman epic and the former capital of the kingdom was consolidated and culminated with the pavilions of the National Exhibition in Palermo in 1891 and, among other things, numerous restorations of Norman churches.

L’articolo espone brevemente le ragioni che hanno portato Palermo a partire dai primi anni dell’Ottocento alla rivalutazione dell’architettura normanna con la conseguente diffusione degli studi appositi e la realizzazione di restauri e nuovi edifici in stile neomedievale. In tale periodo viene coniato il termine “arabo-normanno”, relativo allo stile dei monumenti di epoca medievale indifferentemente dall’epoca di fondazione. Nella seconda metà del secolo il processo associativo tra l’epopea normanna, ormai mitologica, e la ex capitale del regno si consolida e culmina con i padiglioni dell’Esposizione Nazionale di Palermo nel 1891 e, tra le altre cose, con numerosi restauri di chiese normanne.
