Considerazioni sulla bottega dei fratelli Giuseppe e Giacomo Serpotta: il gusto dello stucco barocco in Sicilia tra protagonisti e comprimari

The article systematically focuses on the Palermo-based workshop of the stucco artists Giuseppe and Giacomo Serpotta. After highlighting the role of their training in the workshop of their father, the sculptor and stucco artist Gaspare Serpotta—who is newly credited with an unpublished marble statue—the study begins with the construction site of the church of La Pinta in Palermo, documented as involving Giuseppe, where a contribution by Giacomo is also hypothesized. The article then compares the results of the brothers’ parallel production, with particular attention to Giuseppe’s work, aiming to distinguish and identify the different hands involved in their joint projects, such as those at the Badia Nuova and the Oratory of the Rosary in Santa Zita, Palermo. Giacomo is also credited with the niche in the entrance hall of the Archbishop’s Palace in Palermo, which has so far been overlooked by scholars.

L’articolo si sofferma in maniera sistematica sulla bottega palermitana degli stuccatori Giuseppe e Giacomo Serpotta. Dopo aver posto in evidenza anche il ruolo della formazione nella bottega paterna, ovvero dello scultore e stuccatore Gaspare Serpotta, del quale si rende nota un’inedita statua marmorea attribuitagli, si prendono le mosse dal cantiere della chiesa palermitana della Pinta, documentato a Giuseppe, in cui si ipotizza un intervento di Giacomo. A seguire si confrontano gli esiti della produzione parallela dei fratelli stuccatori con particolare attenzione a quella di Giuseppe, con l’obiettivo di distinguere e identificare le diverse mani nelle opere comuni, per esempio alla Badia Nuova e all’oratorio del Rosario in S. Zita di Palermo. A Giacomo viene inoltre attribuita l’edicola dell’androne del Palazzo Arcivescovile di Palermo finora ignorata dalla critica.
