The article addresses the issue of functional segregation of women within Italian universities. By examining the level of feminization in governing bodies in relation to the perception of their bureaucratic nature and decision-making power, the analysis confirms for the Italian case what has already been observed in other university contexts. A clear differentiation emerges between the strategic and maintenance functions of the university system, with a corresponding trend toward the masculinization of the former and the feminization of the latter.

Abstract

The article addresses the issue of functional segregation of women within Italian universities. By examining the level of feminization in governing bodies in relation to the perception of their bureaucratic nature and decision-making power, the analysis confirms for the Italian case what has already been observed in other university contexts. A clear differentiation emerges between the strategic and maintenance functions of the university system, with a corresponding trend toward the masculinization of the former and the feminization of the latter.
