Le isole del Mediterraneo moderno: frontiere, connessioni, isolamento

The theme of islands, as isolated microcosms and sounding boards of closed and inward-looking societies, has had a profound and fascinating fortune in the literary field, just as there is no shortage of examples of a metaphorical declination of the island as an expression of the human condition. If literature has therefore contributed to fueling a dual interpretation of insularity, between isolation and connection, between closures and openings, with a sea that tightens and encloses or, on the contrary, opens and enriches, what reading and interpretation can be outlined through the gaze of historians? What can the historical investigation of these territories return, which undoubtedly have a geographical peculiarity, but which elude easy generalizations with regard to ways and forms of government, social structures, economic organizations? The essay investigates the function of the Mediterranean islands, especially in the crucial moments of the modern age, as essential hubs for redefining balances in the changing global context, between Mare Nostrum and the Atlantic dimension

Il tema delle isole, quali microcosmi isolati e casse di risonanza di società chiuse e ripiegate su se stesse, ha avuto in ambito letterario una profonda quanto affascinante fortuna, così come non mancano esempi di una declinazione metaforica dell’isola quale espressione della condizione umana. Se la letteratura ha dunque contribuito ad alimentare una duplice interpretazione dell’insularità, tra isolamento e connessione, tra chiusure e aperture, con un mare che stringe e racchiude o che, al contrario, apre e arricchisce, quale lettura e interpretazione può delinearsi attraverso lo sguardo degli storici? Cosa può restituire l’indagine storica di questi territori che hanno indubbiamente una peculiarità geografica, ma che si sottraggono a facili generalizzazioni per ciò che riguarda modi e forme di governo, strutture sociali, organizzazioni economiche? Il saggio indaga la funzione delle isole mediterranee, soprattutto nei momenti cruciali dell'età moderna, quali snodi essenziali per ridefinire equilibri nel mutevole contesto globale, tra Mare Nostrum e dimensione atlantica
