This chapter explores the relevance of various anthropological schools and approaches in understanding the domini collettivi (rural commons in Italy). It compares customary land tenure in Africa and the Italian commons, highlighting analogies and differences. The chapter argues that the dominance of private land ownership is a specific outcome of capitalist society. Drawing on the emerging concept of "Territories of Life," it contends that communal management of land and natural resources should be considered the standard mode of human interaction with territory, especially suited to promoting sustainable territorial governance
